Très rare édition originale imprimée à Shanghaï.

Directeur de la public school de Shanghaï et auteur de plusieurs livres sur la Chine, George Lanning (1852-1920), s'appuyant sur ses propres observations, consacre principalement son propos aux oiseaux.
Cependant trois chapitres (pp. 185-196) sont consacrés à la chasse et la fauconnerie ; deux au tigre ; et quatre au léopard, au lynx, au chat sauvage, aux autres mammifères et à « some big game » (ours, argali, ibex, etc.) Le livre se termine par une annexe de 18 pages consacrée aux grandes chasses dans l'ouest montagneux de la Chine.

Exemplaire offert par l'auteur à Henling Thomas Wade, auteur de With boat and guns in the Yangtze Valley (1895) qu'il cite dans sa préface comme une référence incontournable.
Intéressantes notes marginales au crayon. Quelques rares rousseurs.
